We would like to acknowledge the passing of a Shuar leader from the Ecuadorian Amazon named María Taant.The Shuar are an indigenous tribe living in the tropical rainforests, lowlands, and savannas of Ecuador.María, who lived in the jungles of the Amazon, participated in gatherings of the Network of Amazonian Women, as well as the "Mandate of the Amazonian Women Defenders of the Forest Against Extractivism," which was delivered in Quito. María was a single mother of four children and was highly involed in protecting and fighting for her community. She loved to sing songs to raise the energy of others, revere nature, and stand for fairness and justice.Let us remember her spirit and her fight, and those she made an impact on.

National Day of Mourning, also known as UnThanksgiving Day.UnThanksgiving Day began on November 20, 1968, when Alcatraz Island was occupied by Native American and Civil Rights activists to draw attention to Indigenous rights and history.While the occupation was forcefully ceased by the US Government on June 11, 1971, the movement lived on. The first UnThanksgiving Day, also known as Indigenous Peoples Sunrise Ceremony, was held November 25, 1975.The ceremony is organized by the International Indian Treaty Council & American Indian Contemporary Arts and begins before sunrise.
